ABOUT US

For more than 50 years, Washington Street Community Center (WSCC) has been uniting the neighbors and neighborhoods of south central Denver. It is an inter-generational gathering place for the community and a center providing services to meet the needs of families, seniors, children and adults. Since 1967, WSCC has continuously provided a place to meet, learn and socialize for area residents of all ages.

Our Mission Statement is

to cultivate meaningful community participation through programs designed to meet the needs of working families, individuals, and groups in south central Denver and the greater metro area.  As a neighborhood hub we celebrate inclusivity, diversity, and civic engagement.

To achieve our mission we focus on:

  • Family Resources – quality, affordable programs for children and families offered year round.

  • Community Programs – programs for adults of all ages; facilities rentals and partnerships that contribute to an active, healthy and flourishing community.

  • Neighborhood hub -- access to information for a wide range of ages; meal services; gathering space; continuous learning opportunities; inclusive and open to all.

Volunteers are the backbone of WSCC providing over 2,500 hours annually to further our mission.

NETWORKING

Since its foundation in 1967, when a group of community members who believed that a community center

would strengthen and revitalize the “neighbor helping neighbor” concept in an increasingly diverse society,

WSCC has aimed to be the community hub for Denver.

Throughout the years, WSCC has adapted to the continuous changes in the neighborhood. We started as a soup kitchen, became a robust senior program, and now house a preschool. We have offered parenting classes and child care for struggling parents, given seniors a place to socialize and receive medical services in their neighborhood, and we’ve created a home away from home for so many of our friends and neighbors. People have learned how to knit in our dining room, how to square-dance in the original church sanctuary, and how to read in our classrooms.

We have served Denver for over 50 years and are making plans to continue providing services for another 50 years!
